On 20th May 2023, Australian commercial law firm HWL Ebsworth reported they had become the latest victim of a ransomware attack. The attack was carried out by Russian-linked hacking group ALPHV/Blackcat, who have claimed to have obtained 4TB of sensitive data including CVs, IDs, financial reports, client documentation and credit card information. These types of attacks are sadly becoming increasingly common for professional and legal services in Australia, according to a study by Palo Alto Networks. In response, the Australian government has made increased resources available for the Australian federal police as well as appointing a national cybersecurity coordinator. This comes after Medibank refused to release the findings of an external Deloitte report into their own hack for security reasons.
