On December 6th, real estate giant LJ Hooker became the latest victim of a cyber attack by the Russian-linked ransomware gang ALPHV. The gang claims to have stolen 375 gigabytes of employee and customer data, including passport scans, credit card details, loans data and social media credentials, as well as other “internal company data”. LJ Hooker has confirmed the breach and has taken steps to protect the data of its customers from further damage.
This major attack comes just three months after the reported breaches of telecommunications behemoth Optus and health insurer Medibank, which were the biggest hacks in Australian history. ALPHV is also known to have been behind the Colonial Pipeline hack in the US, where the organisation was forced to pay a ransom of 75 Bitcoin worth $US5 million.
The ensuing data breaches are a stark reminder of the importance of developing security measures and protocols to protect customer data.
