A massive data breach of 200GB of sensitive customer information was revealed last week by Australia’s largest private health insurance company Medibank. In response, the Australian government has increased the maximum fine companies can incur for failing to adequately protect personal data. Privacy experts have argued that while it is a welcome move, further steps must be taken, such as updating existing privacy laws and definitions, and increasing the funding of the Office of the Australian Information Commissioner (OAIC), to ensure adequate protection of personal data. Additionally there is currently no legal definition of ‘serious’ privacy breaches, which the government will also need to address.
