The group claiming to be responsible, known as Medusa, has become known for extorting targets by stealing data and encrypting it, threatening to publish it if a ransom is not paid. NSW Health has said that the security and safety of all their systems is a priority and they are currently monitoring the situation. Medusa has become the second-most active cyber extortion group in the Pacific according to analysts.
