Cybercriminals have launched a new scam targeting disabled Australians and taxpayers by creating a fake website impersonating a genuine NDIS provider. Unsuspecting individuals are asked to provide their name, address, NDIS number, and existing NDIS plan on an online form to access the phony site’s services. The Australian Government has allocated AUD48.3 million in its 2023/23 Budget to fight against cyber-criminals but the current government still has work to do in order to curb online fraud. Meanwhile, a Melbourne-based healthcare startup named Kismet has been funded to develop software to help with fraud prevention. As a measure of caution, NDIS clients are urged to sign off invoices for services above a certain amount.
